My laptop has been plagued by unscheduled shutdowns the last 5 days. The diagnostics passes the hardware. My machine has always run hot but now it often shuts down right after start up.

Anything recommended to search for software invaders or other thoughts?

Two thoughts. First, this is a hardware problem. Second, make sure you have copies of the documents you are working on in case it would not turn on.

Fan passes on the hardware diagnostic. In fact the complete hardware diagnostic running over 1 hour finds no problems, but it does seem like a "loose wire".

Paying more attention to regularly coping on home network to desktop.

I wouldn't take much from the hardware diagnostic. All it's doing for a fan is probably just seeing if it powers up. A loose wire would not shut the computer down - it would prevent it from starting in the first place. You've got an overheating issue, quite possibly a graphics card problem. I would be very surprised if it's anything else.

It could be a failing power supply, but since it's a laptop, heat is always the first thing to look at.
